(A CHILD HAS JUST BEEN BORN)

Neighbors, Friends, Two Gypsies, et al.

Arrive and Stand Talking in the

Doorway of the Man’s House

—All the heaven and earth

are singing in his praise.

It was for him the tide

didn’t go out tonight.

—It was for him the tide

made its motor stop.

The mud stayed covered up

and the stench didn’t rise.

—And Sargasso lavender,

acid and disinfectant,

came to sweep our streets,

sent from the distant sea.

—And the sponge-dry tongue

of wind from the interior

came to suck the moisture

out of the stagnant puddle.

—All the heaven and earth

are singing in his praise.

And every house becomes

an inviting refuge.

—Every hut becomes

the kind of ideal refuge

highly thought of by

the sociologists.

—The orchestra of mosquitoes

that broadcasts every night,

because of him, I think,

is off the air tonight.

—And this river, always blind,

opaque from eating dirt,

that never reflects the sky,

has adorned itself with stars.
